Joseph Beuys is a key figure in the history of what might now be called “eco-art.” He was a founding member of the Green Party and his notion of social sculpture is critical to understanding contemporary art. While many of his works are steeped in mysticism, such as How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare and I like America and America likes me, others set the terms more directly for artist working today on ecological issues. His Energy Plan for the Western Man, a lecture series as art work, might well be positioned as leading to the current emphasis on dialogue. 7000 Oaks is perhaps the most essential projects in terms of strategies of eco-art.
